People are usually surprised when I tell them that I like multitasking and often enjoy doing many things at one time. But somehow I have not mastered the art of reading two things at the same time. Just the other day, I was reading reviews of Microsoft Office 2010, on a popular tech website and whenever I tried to scroll down the page, a pop-up would open. And this pop up was no way related to Office 2010, all it did was interrupt my flow of reading and tried to sell me another magazine subscription I did not want or need!
This was not the only thing that bothered me that day! I was a little troubled when I noticed that I only saw these weird pop-ups when I was using my home computer. At work, I am online 8 out of 9 hours, but I have never seen a single pop- up on my computer! Whereas, in the one hour that I spend in front of computer at home, I am constantly closing pop-up windows! Well, I found out that I am not the only one who was troubled by pop-up advertisements; in fact there are millions of computer users all over the world who face this issue. You can’t believe the relief I felt at our shared misery!
Most websites use pop-up to generate traffic to their site and capture email addresses to eventually fill your mailbox with spam messages. The only solution to pop-up advertisement is a pop-up blocker. If you would remember, in one of my earlier posts on Spyware I had talked about the need to install a pop blocker and I guess, the time had come to act on my own words.
I had to install a pop-up blocker on my home computer immediately!
While googling for pop-up blockers, I found out that if I used Internet Explorer I did not have to install a separate blocker. IE comes with a built in pop-up blocker. Imagine my delight, I would not have to download software and spend hours waiting for it to install. In IE, all I had to do was switch on the pop-up blocking option. I first double clicked on IE icon on the desktop and then clicked on ‘Tools’ on the menu bar. Next from the drop down menu I selected ‘Internet Options’ and in the dialog box which opened, I clicked on the ‘Privacy’ tab. In the ‘Privacy’ tab, I selected the ‘Turn on Pop-up blocker’ option and then clicked on ‘Apply’ followed by ‘OK’. And with this, I finally managed to rid my internet browsing experience of irritating pop-ups.
