I have been doing a lot thinking these days; I have had lots of time to do that lately. And before you label me as a day dreamer killing time at work, let me clarify, I spend close to four hours travelling each day. And some of the most productive ideas have come to me while I have been on the road, stuck in a traffic jam!
Lately all of my thoughts have somehow been focused on my laptop and how to make it work more efficiently. And during a rather long traffic jam, I decided that I would upgrade to Windows 7 from Windows Vista. I know serious techies would gawk in disbelief at the fact that I stuck to Windows Vista for so long! In my defense, all I have to say is I did not realize what a memory hog Vista was until I saw my colleague’s laptop working on Windows 7. And let me not forget the user interface, which turned out to be the deciding factor for the switch.
Upgrading to Windows 7 is probably the wisest decision I have taken in a long time. Moreover, I did not waste time mulling over my decision and bought the installation disc for Windows 7 last weekend. Upgrading to Windows 7 was easy, all I had to do was put in the installation disk and the setup wizard guided me through the entire process. I was upgrading to Windows 7 Home Premium from Windows Vista Home Premium, so the process was fairly easy and I did not have to follow the clean reinstall process (which I would have had to do in case I was upgrading from Windows Vista Home Basic).
Even though I was upgrading to a new OS, which would make my computer work better and make it as good as new, I knew that I did not want to lose any important data that I had stored in it. Like everyone, I store pictures on my computer, download music and movies and keep draft copies of all my blog entries till date, I wouldn’t want to lose all that in the process. I have seen my friends and colleagues crying over having lost years of painfully collected gigabytes of memories and music- when their computers crashed, I was sure that I was not going to repeat their mistakes. So, before inserting the installation disk, I copied all the data on to an external hard drive, thus saving me the trouble of shedding some additional tears.
So for the benefit of people, willing to step into the world of Windows 7, this is how I upgraded to Windows 7- in just a few steps. The very first step is to ensure that your computer is switched on, if not, please start it. Then insert the Windows 7 disc in the DVD drive and click on ‘Install Now’. After which it is recommended to click on ‘Go online to get the latest updates’ to retrieve any important updates for Windows 7. Or else you can click on ‘Do not get the latest updates’. Next click on ‘I accept the License Terms’ and then click Next. To continue the process of upgrading to Windows 7 you have to click on ‘Upgrade’.
After these steps, Windows runs a compatibility check. If no driver incompatibilities are found, Windows 7 Setup will proceed without any further delay.
As a matter of fact our iYogi website on Windows 7 has a detailed step by step guide for upgrading to Windows 7. To see those steps, all you have to do is to just click here.
